A UAE licence, but no bank would open
A founder formed a free-zone company quickly, then spent months collecting declines. The structure was fine on paper and unbankable in practice.
Composite scenario: built from the kinds of mandates we handle, with details changed and combined. It does not describe a specific client. Results depend on the business, the providers and the file.
- Entity
- UAE free-zone company
- Problem
- Multiple bank declines
- Root cause
- Licence, substance and story didn’t match
- Goal
- An operating account that holds
The situation
The licence activity didn’t match what the business actually did, there was no lease beyond a virtual address, and no signatory was resident. Every application answered “why the UAE?” badly.
Each decline made the next application harder, because banks ask about previous attempts.
What we changed
- Aligned the licence activity with the real business and added the right office arrangement for the banks being targeted.
- Wrote the “why the UAE” case properly: customers, suppliers and operations that actually sit in or run through the region.
- Prepared one complete file and went to banks and EMIs that fit the profile, disclosing the earlier declines with a clear explanation instead of hiding them.
What held
- An EMI account first, to start operating and build history.
- A local bank account opened once the file had substance and a few months of activity behind it.
The lessonChoose the bank before the free zone, not after.
A subscription merchant processing everything through one acquirer gets a termination notice. The job: stay live, then never be in that position again.
