UAE Corporate Bank Account: Requirements, Banks and Timelines

What UAE banks require to open a business account in 2026, what Emirates NBD, Mashreq, Wio and RAKBANK publish, realistic timelines, and why applications get rejected.

Opening a UAE corporate bank account is usually the slowest part of setting up in the Emirates. The license can arrive in a day. The bank account can take anywhere from one business day at a digital bank to several weeks at a traditional one, and plenty of applications are declined on the first attempt.

The short version: UAE banks want a clear, licensed business with an activity that matches its paperwork, owners they can fully identify, a documented source of funds, and a real connection to the UAE, which in practice usually means at least one signatory with a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. Get those four right and most free zone and mainland companies can open an account. Get one wrong and the application stalls or is rejected.

This guide covers UAE bank account requirements, the document checklist, what Emirates NBD, Mashreq, Wio and RAKBANK publish about their business accounts, realistic timelines, and the most common reasons UAE banks reject applications.

Why a UAE corporate bank account takes work to open

UAE banks are regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) and apply risk-based anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer rules. The FATF removed the UAE from its "grey list" of jurisdictions under increased monitoring in February 2024, after the country completed an action plan on AML deficiencies. The practical result for applicants: banks are careful, well documented and conservative, because their correspondent banks and regulators are watching their onboarding decisions.

That conservatism shows up as three questions every compliance team asks:

  1. Can we identify everyone behind this company? Every shareholder, every beneficial owner at 25% or more, every signatory.
  2. Do we understand what this business does and where the money comes from? Activity, customers, suppliers, countries, expected volumes, and the origin of the founders' capital.
  3. Is the business actually connected to the UAE? Residence, office, staff, local counterparties, or a clear commercial reason for banking here.

UAE bank account requirements: the document checklist

Requirements vary by bank and risk rating, but a complete file for a free zone company bank account typically includes:

Company documents

  • Trade license (valid, not under renewal)
  • Certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles of association
  • Share certificates and the shareholder register
  • Lease agreement or flexi-desk agreement (Ejari for mainland offices)
  • UBO declaration or register extract
  • Board resolution authorizing the account and naming signatories

Owner and signatory documents

  • Passports, UAE residence visas and Emirates IDs for signatories and major shareholders
  • Proof of residential address
  • CVs or professional profiles showing relevant experience

Business evidence

  • A short business plan: what you sell, to whom, in which countries, and how customers pay
  • Expected monthly volumes, currencies and counterparty countries
  • Signed contracts, invoices, purchase orders or letters of intent from real customers and suppliers
  • A working website that matches the licensed activity

Source of funds and wealth

  • Personal or corporate bank statements showing where the starting capital came from
  • For corporate shareholders: the parent's financial statements, structure chart and its own KYC documents, often attested

Corporate documents issued outside the UAE usually need legalization or attestation, and documents not in English or Arabic need certified translation.

Emirates ID, residency and substance

The single biggest variable in UAE business banking is whether anyone connected to the company lives in the UAE.

  • Emirates NBD's digital business account FAQ states that at least one authorized signatory must be a UAE resident, and lists Emirates IDs and passports for all shareholders among the required documents.
  • Mashreq's one-day account opening promise for NEO BIZ Express applies when the applicant verifies identity digitally through Emirates ID facial recognition.
  • Most other banks apply similar logic, even when it isn't published as a hard rule.

This is why many founders who will spend most of their time abroad still take one residence visa through their free zone company. The Emirates ID is often what unlocks digital onboarding.

Substance goes beyond the ID card. Banks look for signs the business operates from the UAE: an office (a flexi-desk is often acceptable for a small, clearly international business, but it doesn't prove much), local staff, UAE suppliers or service providers, and management decisions taken here. Non-resident owners with no UAE footprint face the hardest path. They are better served by a structure where the account sits in a jurisdiction that matches the business, which we cover in our guide to opening a bank account for an offshore company.

One thing that doesn't work: appointing a nominee or a hired "resident signatory" to satisfy the residency requirement while someone else controls the account. Banks screen for exactly this, the UBO regime requires the real controller to be disclosed, and it's a common route to a closed account and a suspicious activity report.

Anything unusual about your activity, ownership or countries will move you out of the fast lane at any bank.

Digital banks, traditional banks and EMIs

  • Digital banks (Wio, NEO BIZ) are fast and cheap for straightforward, UAE-resident-owned businesses. They are less flexible for complex structures and higher-risk activities.
  • Traditional banks take longer but can handle trade finance, larger volumes, corporate shareholders and more complex flows.
  • EMIs and payment accounts are not banks. They can provide multi-currency IBANs and are useful alongside a UAE account, but they don't replace one for most UAE-licensed businesses. See our comparison of EMIs vs banks for multi-currency IBANs.

How to open a business bank account in the UAE: step by step

  1. Prepare the file before you incorporate. Draft the business plan, gather source-of-funds evidence and collect customer or supplier contracts while the license is being issued.
  2. Get your residence visa and Emirates ID if you plan to be a signatory and will be based in the UAE.
  3. Shortlist two or three banks whose risk appetite fits your activity and structure. Applying everywhere at once rarely helps.
  4. Submit the application online or through a relationship manager, with the full document set.
  5. Complete the KYC interview. Expect questions on your background, customers, suppliers, expected flows and why you're banking in the UAE. Answers must match your documents.
  6. Respond to follow-up requests quickly and consistently. Most delays come from incomplete answers.
  7. Account activation, online banking setup and initial funding. Emirates NBD notes no initial deposit is required but funds should be available within the first 30 days.

Realistic timelines

  • Digital bank, simple profile, resident signatory: from one business day to about a week.
  • Traditional bank, standard free zone company: commonly two to six weeks.
  • Corporate shareholders, multiple jurisdictions, higher-risk activity: can take longer, and approval is not guaranteed.

Why UAE banks reject business account applications

Most rejections fall into a small number of patterns:

  • License and activity mismatch. The license says "management consultancy" and the website sells supplements. Banks check.
  • Unclear source of funds. Capital arriving from an unexplained account, a third party, or a high-risk jurisdiction without documentation.
  • Ownership they can't see through. Layers of holding companies, trusts or foundations without clear registers and structure charts up to the natural persons.
  • No UAE connection. Non-resident owners, a flexi-desk, and no local staff, suppliers or customers.
  • High-risk activity without controls. Crypto, forex, gaming, adult, nutraceuticals, money services and similar activities aren't automatically refused, but they need licensing where required and written AML and compliance controls.
  • Sanctions or high-risk country exposure among owners, customers, suppliers or payment routes.
  • Inconsistent answers between the application, the interview and the documents.
  • Adverse media or prior account closures that weren't disclosed.

A rejection is not a blacklist, but multiple rejections in a short period don't help. Fix the underlying issue before applying elsewhere, and never re-apply with a restructured entity designed to hide the reason for the previous refusal.

Keeping the account once it's open

Opening is only the first review. UAE banks run periodic KYC refreshes and monitor activity against what you told them at onboarding. Accounts get restricted or closed when:

  • Volumes, currencies or counterparty countries change sharply without explanation
  • Funds pass straight through with no clear commercial purpose
  • The trade license lapses or activities change without an update to the bank
  • KYC refresh requests go unanswered

Tell your relationship manager before a material change, not after. For what happens when a bank de-risks anyway, and how to protect operations, read why business bank accounts get frozen.

Free zone company bank account: extra considerations

  • Pick the zone with banking in mind. Some zones have banking partnerships or in-house bank desks, and a well-known zone can make a bank's first review easier. Our UAE free zone company setup comparison covers the trade-offs.
  • Keep your activities narrow and accurate. A license with 10 unrelated activities raises questions.
  • Plan for corporate tax and VAT. Every UAE company must register for corporate tax, so have your registration and VAT position ready when the bank asks. See our guide to UAE corporate tax for free zone companies.

How Actionman helps

We prepare the bank file with you, match your structure and activity to banks whose risk appetite fits, and make introductions where we have relationships. We don't hold client funds, and we don't dress up applications: the aim is an account that stays open because the bank understood the business from day one. If you're planning a UAE entity or have been declined, get in touch with your activity, ownership structure and expected volumes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-resident open a UAE corporate bank account?

It is possible but considerably harder. Many UAE banks require at least one authorized signatory with a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, and non-resident owners face more scrutiny on substance and source of funds. Some founders take a residence visa through their company for this reason; others bank the business in a jurisdiction that better matches where it operates.

What is the minimum balance for a business account in the UAE?

It depends on the bank and package. Some entry accounts have no minimum balance but charge a monthly fee, such as Mashreq's NEO BIZ Express Lite plan or Wio's subscription plans, while traditional packages can require average balances in the tens of thousands of dirhams. Check the current key facts statement before applying.

Can I open a UAE business account before my trade license is issued?

Generally no. Banks need a valid, issued trade license, and Emirates NBD's digital onboarding FAQ states applications cannot proceed while a license is under formation or renewal. You can, however, prepare the rest of the file in parallel so you can apply the day the license arrives.

Will a UAE bank tell me why my application was rejected?

Usually not in detail. Banks are generally not obliged to explain declines and may be legally restricted from doing so. Review the common causes, such as activity mismatch, unclear source of funds or ownership, and lack of UAE connection, and fix the underlying issue before applying elsewhere.

Can I open a multi-currency business account in the UAE?

Yes. Several UAE banks offer multi-currency or foreign-currency business accounts, including Mashreq and RAKBANK, and Wio includes a multicurrency account on its Essential plan. Availability of specific currencies and international payment corridors varies by bank and by your risk profile.
